Farming with God
My husband and I bought my family's farm 4 years ago. My husband, raised in the cities his entire life and lived a life style that was far from a quiet country life. We decided to get a few animals at a time so we both could learn how to work together on a farm. I already knew what this life was like but not one with Gabe in it. My husband has a wonderful heart but has very little penitence and he is meticulous (everything has a place where it belongs). I am not like Gabe I am a very free spirit and don't mind chaos and clutter. I was raised on a hobby farm and my life never really seemed to have the organization to it. So we started with goats and chickens. I have never raised goats or chickens but hey how hard could it be? I have had pigs and cattle (beef and dairy) in the past so I knew the basic needs of animals. Wow, goats are escape artist so we learned the key to creating a successful goat pen after several attempts. The chickens were not hard to deal with but learned that they need to be happy in order to get some eggs out of them they didn't lay any for like 6 to 7 months. Now we have also raised butcher chickens and we learned how to use a chicken plucker, clean, butcher, and how to package chicken with a vacuum sealer. I have had a garden for two years and did my first successful canning and freezing of our produce this past fall. I also work full time but I have the summers off (I am a teacher) so this is very helpful for the whole raising chicken season and having a garden. I love this life don't get me wrong but it is definitely not easy and it consumes much of our time. I often have to stop and to remember to put God before everything and to be grateful for the blessings he gives us every day. Why is it so hard to remember to pray? or take the time to read the Bible? So I am going to try a new routine to my day. I am going to start my day with God and I am going to use an app for that. I know you might think that id funny but as much as I love my simple country life I love technology too. The app is called " First 5" you can even have it create a daily reminder to start your day with God. It only takes 5 minutes and you can read it before your feet ever hit the floor in the morning. What a great way to start the day right?
So now I can start my day with God and then the farm work. The chores on the farm don't really take too long there are just a billion projects that need to be completed before winter because in Minnesota we have a short summer and a long winter, and spring and fall go by so fast you that by the time you get to enjoy it the next season is already here. Adventures in marriage, family life, farm life, and my career will continue to overwhelm me and challenge me in ways that will stretch my abilities and help me grow, and I am so happy that I can start my mornings with God first.
